Renewables generated 45.5% of the EU’s electricity in Q1 2026


Renewable energy sources accounted for 45.5% of the electricity generated in the European Union during the first quarter of 2026, up from 42.7% in the same period of 2025, according to the latest data published by Eurostat.

Wind power remained the EU’s largest renewable electricity source, accounting for 44.9% of total renewable electricity generation, compared with 42.3% in the first quarter of 2025.

Hydropower ranked second, contributing 28.0% of renewable electricity generation, followed by solar at 17.3%. The remaining renewable electricity came from combustible renewable fuels (9.4%) and geothermal and other energy sources (0.4%).

Denmark, Portugal and Lithuania lead the EU

Among EU countries, Denmark recorded the highest share of electricity generated from renewable sources, with 90.0% of its electricity production coming mainly from wind power.

It was followed by Portugal, where renewables accounted for 82.9% of electricity generation, driven primarily by hydropower, and Lithuania, with 75.7%, mostly generated from wind energy.

At the other end of the ranking, Czechia recorded the lowest share of renewable electricity generation at 12.7%, followed by Malta with 13.0% and Slovakia with 17.2%, according to Eurostat.
