Shift to green energy reduces Denmark's fossil fuel dependence
The 2023 energy producer census reveals a reduction in fuel consumption for electricity and district heating production, with a notable drop in coal usage. Increasingly, energy production is being sourced from fuel-free alternatives.

Fuel usage for generating electricity and district heating has decreased by 10% compared to 2022, with coal consumption plummeting by 39%. This decline is attributed to a growing reliance on fuel-free energy sources such as wind turbines, solar panels, heat pumps, and electric boilers.
The share of electricity generated from wind, solar, and other fuel-free sources rose from 60% in 2022 to 68% in 2023. For district heating, production from heat pumps and electric boilers saw a significant increase, boosting the share of fuel-free sources from 11% in 2022 to 14% in 2023.
