UK launches a £1 billion fund to reinforce clean energy supply chains

The United Kingdom has unveiled a major initiative to reinforce its clean energy supply chains and support long-term economic growth. Great British Energy (GBE) has launched the £1 billion Energy Engineered in the UK (EEUK) programme, designed to mobilise public and private investment, unlock critical manufacturing capacity and create thousands of skilled jobs.

As part of the programme, GBE is opening its £300 million Supply Chain Fund: Offshore Wind & Networks, aimed at tackling urgent bottlenecks in essential components for the energy transition. These include blades, turbines, transmission cables and converter stations, all crucial for offshore wind deployment and grid development.

According to GBE, the fund will help expand domestic manufacturing capacity and ensure the UK remains a leading force in offshore wind and electricity network innovation. The initiative forms a central pillar of the UK Government’s modern Industrial Strategy, which outlines a ten-year plan to stimulate investment, create high-quality employment and strengthen Britain’s competitiveness as a hub for clean energy technologies.

GBE will collaborate with key partners — the National Wealth Fund, the Scottish National Infrastructure Bank and The Crown Estate — to unlock financing for large-scale manufacturing projects across the country.

In parallel, the organisation is establishing a Deepwater Wind Commercialisation Programme in partnership with FLOWEX, bringing together industry leaders to advance the next generation of deepwater offshore wind and capture its industrial opportunities.

GBE says the Energy Engineered in the UK initiative will deliver:

  • Increased high-value manufacturing capacity

  • Skilled, well-paid jobs across the country

  • A more resilient supply chain for future low-carbon technologies

GBE CEO Dan McGrail said the programme represents a significant investment in British industry. “Great British Energy is investing in British industry, we are helping to create jobs, driving innovation, and ensuring clean energy infrastructure is built here in the UK. This programme is about more than funding; it will help overcome the current challenges and ensure the benefits of a world-class supply chain are felt in communities across the country.”

Energy Minister Michael Shanks said the initiative supports the government’s ambition to build the UK’s clean energy future domestically. “We want our clean energy future to be built here in Britain as part of our modern Industrial Strategy”, he said.

Rob Gilbert, Director of Supply Chains at GBE, stressed the strategic importance of the EEUK programme. “Energy, Engineered in the UK, is a national initiative to drive down technology costs, crowd in private finance, and use our unique role between the public and private sector to support structured market interventions. This programme will help the UK energy sector to learn collectively, scale deliberately, and compete globally – not just on cost, but on homegrown, long-term capability. This will create jobs, economic growth, and energy security for all areas of the UK.”
