A former UK mining area to host a new solar energy project

Enviromena has announced the approval of the planning for the 8.5 MWp Fox Cover solar park in Seaham, Durham, a locality known for its industrial history, particularly related to coal mining.

According to the company, the project will provide clean and sustainable energy to the region, supplying approximately 3,100 homes per year and saving 1,700 tons of carbon annually.

It will be located near the former Dawdon coal mine, marking a significant transition from the region's coal mining heritage to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

The project will generate significant net biodiversity gains of 213% in habitat units and 192% in hedgerow units, with almost a kilometer of new native hedgerows, 4,000 square meters of forest planting, and eight hectares of grassland habitat.

This approval follows a decisive 9 to 2 vote by the County Durham Planning Committee, a testament to the positive contribution of the project to the local community and the environment.

Community councilor Kevin Shaw pointed out, "The development is 100 yards from where the former Dawdon coal mine was, where we extracted coal for over 100 years, which had a huge impact on the environment."

For his part, Mark Harding, Development Director at Enviromena, commented, "Given the public attention that solar park projects typically attract, the fact that this project had no objections from the local community for legal consultants speaks volumes about the suitability of the site location and the efforts made by the team to develop this plan."
