Avangrid has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Microsoft for the 140 MWdc (100 MWac) Bluebird Solar project in Klickitat County, Washington, expanding the companies’ renewable energy partnership in the United States.

The agreement will bring the total contracted energy capacity between Avangrid and Microsoft in the US to more than 500 MW across four projects.

Bluebird Solar is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 20,000 US homes and is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2028. The project represents an additional $300 million investment by Avangrid in Klickitat County, where the company already owns and operates four other energy projects.

According to Avangrid, construction of the solar facility is expected to create approximately 300 jobs, most of them filled by local union labor. The company also said long-term operations and maintenance activities will support several permanent positions in the area.

Over the project’s lifetime, Bluebird Solar is expected to contribute around $11 million in local property taxes to support public services in the county.

“This adds to Avangrid's strong track record of developing projects to help meet growing energy demands from the world's leading technology companies,” said Jose Antonio Miranda, CEO of Avangrid.

Miranda also highlighted the company’s longstanding presence in Washington state and the economic benefits the project is expected to bring to the local community.

Bluebird Solar becomes the fourth US energy project under contract between Avangrid and Microsoft. The companies previously signed PPAs for Powell Creek Solar in Ohio and Camino Solar in California, both of which entered commercial operation in 2025. They also partnered on the Juniper Canyon Wind project in Washington, which is expected to start commercial operations later this year.

The Bluebird project takes its name from the thousands of bluebirds native to the region. Nearby Bickleton is widely known as the “Bluebird Capital of the World.”

Avangrid, a member of the Iberdrola Group, currently operates more than 11 GW of installed capacity across a portfolio of nearly 100 energy projects in 25 US states.
