Daybreak and Bakeoven: Two new Iberdrola solar plants enter commercial operation in Oregon

Iberdrola has placed into commercial operation two new photovoltaic power plants in the state of Oregon through Avangrid, its U.S. subsidiary, adding 269 MWdc of new solar capacity to the country’s power system amid growing electricity demand.

The projects, Daybreak Solar (189 MWdc) and Bakeoven Solar (80 MWdc), are located in Wasco County and are already supplying electricity to the grid operated by local utility Portland General Electric (PGE). Together, the plants strengthen domestic renewable generation and contribute to a more competitive, resilient and sustainable energy mix.

Both facilities participate in a state-led energy programme designed to expand access to newly built renewable generation for large municipal, industrial and commercial customers, including major technology companies such as Intel. The scheme allows large consumers to secure clean energy in a flexible and cost-effective way. Thanks to these projects and other developments currently underway, Avangrid has consolidated its position as the programme’s leading energy provider.

The commissioning of Daybreak and Bakeoven Solar is also expected to boost local economic activity and employment in Oregon, while reinforcing Iberdrola’s long-term commitment to the United States. The Group currently holds €49.4 billion in assets in the country and plans to invest a further €16 billion through 2028.

At present, Iberdrola supplies electricity to nearly 10 million people across the U.S. through its transmission and distribution networks in New York, Maine, Connecticut and Massachusetts. The company also operates 80 generation facilities nationwide, with close to 11 GW of installed capacity.
