JA SOLAR turns sustainability into action, setting new standards in photovoltaic energy
Sustainable development stands as a pivotal issue of our era, and JA SOLAR is demonstrating how a solar company can rise to the challenge. Guided by its “Green to Grow, Green to Green, Green to Great” (G2G) philosophy, the company has embedded ESG principles across all business operations, striving for a balance between commercial success and social value while setting new industry benchmarks.
As Chairman Jin Baofang notes, “Staying true to our mission of ‘Developing solar power to benefit the planet,’ we will continue collaborating with global partners to advance clean energy, enable a better future, and safeguard our green planet with unwavering original aspiration and enduring forward efforts.”
Low-Carbon Modules and Responsible Production
At the heart of JA SOLAR’s sustainability strategy lies the ITS Low Carbon Module series, designed to reduce embedded carbon by up to 40% compared to standard modules.
This is achieved through the incorporation of up to 50% FBR polysilicon and 50% recycled ingot, cutting the demand for virgin materials and reducing emissions across the value chain. Each module comes with a unique ITS code for full traceability, and its lifecycle carbon footprint is assessed under ISO 14067, reviewed by Kapstan and verified by SGS.
Independent tests confirm that no PFAS substances are present in any JA Solar modules, underscoring the company’s commitment to safe and responsible solar technology.
Sustainability extends beyond module output and materials. JA SOLAR applies circular economy principles across its operations, ensuring that factories exceed regulatory standards in emission control, water conservation, waste management, and biodiversity protection. Recycling and repurposing flows are being developed in collaboration with trusted partners, allowing modules to re-enter the supply chain rather than becoming waste.
Transparency and Governance
Transparency is a cornerstone of JA Solar’s operations and a key element of its “Green to Grow” approach. The company requires full traceability from raw material suppliers, conducts upstream partner audits, and continuously monitors labor, environmental, and governance risks. Its sustainability governance is reinforced through cross-departmental oversight teams and structured reporting frameworks, embedding ESG into the corporate culture rather than treating it as a standalone function.
These efforts have earned international recognition, including Silver Medal Certification from the Solar Stewardship Initiative (SSI) at JA SOLAR’s Shanghai Fengxian and Yangzhou sites. This certification represents one of the highest independent recognitions of ESG performance in the solar industry, covering ethics, human rights, supply chain resilience, environmental impact, and social responsibility.
JA SOLAR is also a contributing member of SSI, helping to shape global auditing protocols and sustainability standards for solar manufacturing. Additionally, the company has received the EcoVadis Silver Medal, reflecting long-term excellence in environmental protection, labor rights, ethical business conduct, and sustainable procurement.
Innovation and High-Impact Projects
Innovation remains a driving force for JA SOLAR. In 2024, the company invested over €500 million in R&D, advancing TOPCon technology, launching the DeepBlue 5.0 series, and expanding integrated PV and storage solutions across multiple regions and scenarios. In the same year, JA Solar shipped over 80 GW of PV modules (including 1.547 GW for self-use), avoiding over 50 million tons of CO?e, contributing significantly to the global transition toward green energy.
A landmark example of sustainability in action is the Borussia Dortmund (BVB) project at Signal Iduna Park — set to become the world’s largest PV installation on a stadium roof. Featuring over 11,000 JA SOLAR modules, the system will generate more than 4 GWh of clean electricity annually, cutting approximately 1,800 tons of CO? emissions per year.
The project highlights the power of collaboration between one of Europe’s most renowned football clubs and JA SOLAR, showing how sports and sustainability can create high-impact initiatives. JA SOLAR was selected for its high-quality, reliable modules and its deep commitment to environmental responsibility, ensuring that every stage of the installation aligns with sustainable practices.
The project serves as a global example of how clean energy can be integrated into iconic venues, inspiring millions of fans while driving meaningful reductions in carbon emissions.
Two Decades of Leadership
In 2025, the company celebrates its 20th anniversary. Amid evolving global dynamics, the company remains committed to its mission: “Developing solar power to benefit the planet.” With sustained investments in R&D, ongoing ESG integration, and global partnerships, JA Solar continues to demonstrate that clean energy must be safe, traceable, low-carbon, and built to last — for this generation and the next.
Through its holistic approach, spanning technological innovation, verified low-carbon solutions, ESG governance, and high-impact projects, JA SOLAR solidifies its position as a global leader shaping the future of sustainable solar energy.
