Portugal sets a new record for installed solar capacity in 2024

During 2024, the National Transmission Grid (RNT) of Portugal connected 776 MW of photovoltaic installations to the grid, which allowed for the installed capacity to be doubled, reaching a total of 1,555 MW, compared to the 779 MW operational at the end of 2023, according to the operator Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN).

With the 476 MW connected last year to the National Distribution Grid (RND), the total installed capacity now stands at 3,872 MW (excluding Production Units for Self-consumption that do not sell surpluses to the Public Grid).

Solar production in 2024 was 4,899 GWh, which represented around 10% of the total consumption of the public grid (51.4 TWh), a 37% increase compared to 2023. This is the highest historical share in national electricity consumption.

According to this report, on September 5, the accumulated solar production in 2024 matched the total solar energy produced throughout 2023 in Portugal. In the first nine months of 2024, 3.99 TWh were generated (from energy injected into the RNT and the National Distribution Grid), surpassing the 3.6 TWh produced from January 1 to December 31, 2023, making 2024 a record year in terms of solar production in Portugal as of September.
