Solar power for Google’s data centers in Ohio

TotalEnergies and Google have signed a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply 1.5 terawatt-hours (TWh) of certified renewable electricity to power Google’s data centers in Ohio. The energy will come from TotalEnergies’ Montpelier solar farm, a facility nearing completion and connected to the PJM grid system, the largest electricity market in the United States.

The agreement supports Google’s efforts to power its operations with clean energy and contributes to TotalEnergies’ growing renewable portfolio in the U.S. The Montpelier solar project will help meet the increasing power demand of the region’s expanding digital infrastructure while reducing carbon emissions.

The collaboration reflects both companies’ commitment to advancing the energy transition. For Google, it is part of its strategy to add new, carbon-free energy to the grids where it operates. For TotalEnergies, it reinforces its goal of providing tailored renewable energy solutions for large-scale data centers—facilities that accounted for nearly 3% of global energy demand in 2024.

This deal also fits within TotalEnergies’ broader U.S. renewable energy strategy. The company is currently developing a 10-gigawatt (GW) portfolio of onshore solar, wind, and battery storage projects across the country, including 1 GW in the PJM market and 4 GW in Texas under the ERCOT system.

The new PPA with Google adds to a growing list of corporate partnerships signed by TotalEnergies with leading global companies such as Data4, STMicroelectronics, Saint-Gobain, Air Liquide, Amazon, LyondellBasell, Merck, Microsoft, Orange, and Sasol.“Strengthening the grid by deploying more reliable and clean energy is crucial for supporting the digital infrastructure that businesses and individuals depend on,” said Will Conkling, Director of Clean Energy and Power at Google. “Our collaboration with TotalEnergies will help power our data centers and the broader economic growth of Ohio.”

“We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with Google with this agreement to supply renewable electricity to their data centers in Ohio,” added Stéphane Michel, President Gas, Renewables & Power at TotalEnergies. “This agreement illustrates our ability to meet the growing energy demands of major tech companies by leveraging our integrated portfolio of renewable and flexible assets. It also contributes to achieving our target of 12% profitability in the power sector.”
