Solar power in Italy breaks 2 million installations and 40 GW capacity
Italy has exceeded 2 million grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) installations, establishing solar power as a cornerstone of the national electricity system. According to Italia Solare, this milestone represents a total of 2,011,056 installations with over 40 GW (40,430 MW) of installed capacity.
In the first seven months of 2025, 132,276 new PV systems were connected, adding 3,354 MW of capacity. This steady growth has been driven by the expansion of residential, industrial, and large-scale installations, alongside increasing awareness of the benefits of self-consumption and the need to integrate solar energy into the national energy mix to help reduce electricity bills.
Paolo Rocco Viscontini, President of Italia Solare, commented: "We have reached a symbolic milestone: two million installations mean millions of households, businesses, and public administrations have chosen a clean, reliable, and autonomous energy source. Solar power is no longer a marginal option; it is an integral part of our energy infrastructure."
The sector’s growth has been supported by falling costs for solar and storage technologies, as well as increasing recognition of solar power’s economic advantages. In the domestic segment (<20 kW), 106,562 systems were installed, totalling 686 MW, while the commercial and industrial segment (20 kW – 1 MW) reached 804 MW. Large-scale utility systems (>1 MW) recorded a 12% annual increase, with 307 installations and 1,319 MW connected in the first six months of 2025.
The five regions with the highest solar penetration are:
-
Lombardy – 326,586 installations (5,419 MW)
-
Veneto – 274,699 installations (4,055 MW)
-
Emilia-Romagna – 198,003 installations (3,855 MW)
-
Lazio – 141,210 installations (3,787 MW)
-
Sicily – 136,511 installations (2,915 MW)
The advance of photovoltaic energy comes amid growing electrification, with heat pumps, electric mobility, energy communities, and new industrial processes demanding decarbonised, accessible, and flexible energy. Integrated with storage systems and digital solutions, solar power is positioned as a key technology for Italy’s energy transition and Europe’s broader goal of achieving full decarbonisation of its building stock by 2050.
