BW ESS and MIRAI Power sign agreement to develop BESS projects in Germany
In a significant milestone for Germany's energy transition, an agreement has been signed between two companies to jointly develop large-scale energy storage systems (BESS) in southern Germany. The companies involved are BW ESS, a global leader in energy storage operation and ownership, and MIRAI Power, an energy storage developer based in Munich. They have agreed to co-develop up to 1GW of energy storage projects.
According to BW ESS, Germany is consolidating its position as one of the key growth hotspots in Europe for BESS. This comes in response to the electricity market's need to integrate large volumes of renewable energy while managing risks associated with negative pricing and curtailment. Germany is not only the largest power market in Europe but also the most liquid, driving strong demand for storage solutions. By 2026, around 7GWh of new storage capacity is expected to be added, marking a five-fold increase compared to the current capacity.
MIRAI Power, a pioneering developer in the BESS field, focuses on the European market and is led by a team with extensive experience in renewable energy companies and large utilities. By combining this expertise with BW ESS’s ability to rapidly scale storage projects across various global markets, along with its proven supply chain and investment connections, the partners plan to identify and develop new opportunities in southern Germany.
Roberto Jiménez, Executive Director of BW ESS, said: “The MIRAI team shares many of the same traits as ours: they are pragmatic, move fast, and have demonstrated considerable commercial acumen. Most importantly, they share our commitment to unlocking the value of energy storage. We are excited to see the opportunities this partnership creates as we expand our presence in the German market.”
Marco Frascati, Managing Director of MIRAI Power, added: “Our mission is to contribute to a sustainable and reliable energy supply through innovative, future-proof BESS projects strategically located across Europe. Southern Germany is a region with great potential for energy storage development, and our partnership with a global leader like BW ESS will help accelerate our efforts to decarbonize the energy system.”
