European Energy sells Dutch wind farm to local company Westra
European Energy has sold a portfolio of 12 wind turbines totaling 6 MW in the Dutch municipality of Waadhoeke to local company Westra, as part of its strategy to recycle capital into new renewable energy developments across Europe.
The transaction, announced today, marks another step in European Energy’s active portfolio management approach, under which the company develops, operates and optimizes renewable energy assets before selectively divesting mature projects to support further growth.
European Energy acquired the wind turbines in 2021 and has managed and operated the assets since then, while working to enhance their long-term value before completing the sale.
Capital recycling to support new renewable projects
According to the company, the divestment will allow it to redeploy capital into the development, construction and operation of new renewable energy projects across its expanding European pipeline.
“Active portfolio management is a core element of our business model and growth strategy,” said Daniel Axelsen, Interim Country Manager for the Netherlands at European Energy.
He noted that the company continuously evaluates opportunities to realize value from mature assets and reinvest proceeds into new projects, enabling further expansion of its renewable energy activities across multiple markets.
European Energy emphasized that the transaction also ensures the assets remain under local ownership while supporting continued investment in renewable energy infrastructure.
Local ownership strengthens renewable energy ambitions
The buyer, Westra, is a Friesland-based company active in infrastructure projects, earthmoving and green maintenance. Headquartered in the municipality of Waadhoeke, the company is located close to the wind assets included in the transaction.
The acquisition expands Westra’s renewable energy portfolio and supports its broader electrification strategy, including its goal of becoming fully emission-free by 2030.
“This acquisition marks an important step in strengthening our renewable energy activities and in realising our ambition to operate fully emission-free by 2030,” said Pieter Westra, Managing Director of Westra.
He added that local ownership remains a key principle for the company, ensuring that both the economic value and responsibility associated with energy projects remain within the communities they serve.
