Advanced fibre rope solutions simplify offshore wind energy installation

The Norwegian company Offshore and Trawl Supply (OTS) manufactures high-tech, high-strength fibre ropes to facilitate installation operations in the offshore wind energy sector.

OTS claims that fibre ropes are not only as strong as steel, but also much lighter than steel cables and chains.

“OTS has lightweight, simple products that are easy to handle. This simplifies offshore operations, reduces risks, and improves health, safety, and the environment,” says Bulling-Ness. “In most cases, the benefits far outweigh any additional cost of fibre.”

To reduce their environmental impact, the company recently switched their entire rope portfolio to bio-based fibre, reducing their carbon footprint related to fibre production by 90%.

All solutions include a basic or advanced version of Dextron®12 Plus, a 12-strand braided, twist-free rope with the highest strength-to-weight ratio. In each size, the rope has the same strength as steel. Dextron®12 Plus is an excellent replacement for steel cables with extremely low stretch, superior fatigue resistance to bending, and wear resistance.

Additionally, the OTS Protective Jacket™ provides excellent protection against external abrasion and increases the rope’s lifespan by up to five times.

The company's managing director, Stein Frode Bulling-Ness, states, “Test results show that OTS has the best rope protection in the world.”

Projections

OTS anticipates significant growth in floating moorings for wind turbines. In particular, the company provided towing solutions for Hywind Tampen, the world's largest floating wind farm

“We consider floating offshore wind energy to be an important growth area for us in the long term. In particular, we are ready to meet the market needs for mooring solutions in floating offshore wind energy,” concludes Bulling-Ness.
