First in the hydrogen sector: Lhyfe guarantees full traceability of green hydrogen with Atmen partnership
In an important milestone for the hydrogen industry, Lhyfe has announced a strategic collaboration with Atmen, an integrated compliance automation platform. Together, they aim to establish a new benchmark in carbon footprint traceability and transparency within the hydrogen and Power-to-X (PtX) sectors.
Lhyfe on the path to RFNBO certification
Since its inception, Lhyfe has been committed to producing hydrogen that meets the highest ecological standards. The company has been eagerly awaiting the approval of the European Commission’s first “RFNBO” (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin) certification schemes for renewable hydrogen. Following the publication of these standards in December 2024, Lhyfe has begun the process to obtain RFNBO certification for its production.
The RFNBO certification confirms that hydrogen is produced sustainably, via water electrolysis, and from 100% renewable electricity. It involves a comprehensive carbon footprint assessment and ensures compliance with stringent European Union criteria, providing enhanced trust among partners, clients, and investors.
Advancing transparency with the Hydrogen Digital Passport
In addition to pursuing RFNBO certification, Lhyfe has worked alongside Atmen to implement an innovative traceability system that offers unprecedented precision and granularity. This new system includes the introduction of a Digital Product Passport for each delivery of Lhyfe’s green hydrogen. The passport provides a detailed carbon footprint report, featuring:
- Energy sourcing: Information about where, when, and how the electricity used in the production process was generated.
- Embedded emissions: A breakdown of carbon intensity calculations at each production step.
- Supply chain contribution: The carbon footprint impact from every stage of processing and logistics.
This collaboration begins with Lhyfe’s production unit in Bouin, France, and will be rolled out across other European sites. As Lhyfe progresses toward RFNBO certification, Digital Product Passports will carry the “RFNBO-compliant” label, ensuring full traceability and compliance.
Simplifying compliance with stringent regulations
By combining Lhyfe’s expertise in renewable hydrogen production and Atmen’s cutting-edge automation software, the partnership aims to simplify the process of meeting sustainability regulations such as RFNBO. Key benefits include:
- Precision in reporting: High-accuracy carbon intensity calculations offer full transparency.
- Compliance automation: Digital Product Passports are automatically generated, reducing the need for manual input and improving efficiency.
- Granular client alignment: Producers can provide detailed carbon footprint data, helping clients meet their emission and decarbonisation targets.
Flore de Durfort, CEO of Atmen, expressed her excitement about the partnership: "Atmen is thrilled to partner with Lhyfe, one of the most innovative and fastest-growing hydrogen producers in Europe. Together, we are setting a new standard in traceability, enabling the hydrogen sector to meet the strictest sustainability requirements with precision and transparency."
For his part, Antoine Hamon, Chief Operations Officer at Lhyfe, emphasized the importance of the collaboration: “Our partnership with Atmen is a major step in realizing our commitment to transparency for our clients, both in sustainability and traceability. The Digital Product Passports will build trust in the sustainability of our hydrogen, and we invite the industry to align with this practice to help develop the sector with a spirit of trust.”
This pioneering collaboration between Lhyfe and Atmen sets a new precedent for the hydrogen sector, ensuring transparency, compliance, and the highest standards in sustainability.
