Market consultation launched for joint German–Canadian H2Global hydrogen tender

Germany and Canada have taken a significant step forward in their energy cooperation by launching a public market consultation for a joint tender under the H2Global initiative. This move supports the creation of a “hydrogen bridge” between the two countries, part of the bilateral hydrogen alliance established in 2022, and aims to foster the development of a global market for green hydrogen.

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWK) and Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN) have agreed to jointly bear the cost differential between the production costs of renewable hydrogen and the price end users are willing to pay — a key barrier that has so far hindered the international ramp-up of the hydrogen economy.

Public consultation open until 10 september

To design this joint tender and meet EU state aid requirements, the BMWK has launched a public consultation in the form of a questionnaire. The survey outlines the planned measure and poses targeted questions to stakeholders. All relevant companies are invited to participate, with the English-language questionnaire available until 10 September 2025.

The H2Global mechanism is an innovative instrument designed to support the timely and effective scaling up of green hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives. It is administered by the non-profit H2Global Foundation, whose subsidiary HINT.CO GmbH manages the allocated funds. These funds are used to compensate the difference between competitively determined supply and demand prices through double auction mechanisms and long-term offtake agreements.

In addition to the planned German-Canadian tender, Germany is also cooperating with the Netherlands and running national calls to support the production of renewable hydrogen. As part of the joint initiative with Canada, both governments are contributing up to €200 million each from their respective funding programmes, including Germany’s Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF).

Through this consultation and upcoming tender, Germany and Canada reaffirm their commitment to advancing the global hydrogen economy and promoting green hydrogen as a cornerstone of the energy transition and decarbonisation efforts.
