Portugal has registered its first Guarantees of Origin (GO) certification for biomethane used in the transport sector, marking a milestone in the country's renewable gases market. The certification was issued by REN – Rede Eléctrica Nacional, acting as the national Issuing Body for Guarantees of Origin (EEGO), making G3 | Go Green Gas the first company in Portugal to certify the renewable origin of biomethane used for transport.

Guarantees of Origin are electronic certificates that verify to end users that a specific amount of energy has been produced from a particular source and technology. For renewable energy, these certificates enable suppliers and consumers to demonstrate the renewable origin of their energy consumption, supporting sustainability strategies and reporting obligations.

According to Isabel Fernandes, REN's Director of Energy Services, the transaction confirms the maturity and reliability of Portugal's national certification platform for renewable gases, demonstrating its ability to support an evolving market while highlighting the interoperability of the Portuguese system with its European counterparts.

Joaquim Marques, CFO and Head of Business Operations at G3 | Go Green Gas, said the certification represents a concrete step toward accelerating the energy transition and the decarbonization of road transport, while reinforcing the company's long-standing commitment to renewable gas-based mobility.

G3 | Go Green Gas, a Portuguese company specializing in gas-powered mobility solutions for heavy passenger and freight transport fleets, became the first company to commercialize biomethane in Portugal in 2023. Since then, certifying the renewable origin of the gas has been a core part of its value proposition, and the company will now carry out this certification through the national EEGO platform.

REN's EEGO platform is responsible for implementing and managing the issuance, transfer and electronic certification of Guarantees of Origin in mainland Portugal. In June 2024, it expanded its scope to include renewable gases, and in November of the same year, following its accession to the Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB) and the European Energy Certificate System (EECS), it enabled the international transfer and mutual recognition of these certificates among participating countries.
