The American Clean Power Association (ACP) has appointed Ken Young, CEO of Apex Clean Energy, as chair of its Board of Directors and added three new directors as the US clean power industry faces growing electricity demand and increasing pressure to strengthen domestic energy security.

Young, who previously served as ACP board chair-elect, takes over the leadership of the industry trade association at a time when the sector is seeking to expand reliable and affordable clean power while supporting a resilient domestic energy system. Alongside his appointment, Justin Johnson, Robert L. Tabb and Caroline Mead have joined the board.

The leadership changes are intended to strengthen ACP's representation of the clean power industry as it works to advance its policy priorities and cooperation across wind, solar, energy storage and other clean energy technologies.

Three new directors join the ACP board

Justin Johnson, chief executive officer of Arevon, and Robert L. Tabb, president and chief executive officer of CoVolt Power, join the board representing new ACP member companies.

Caroline Mead, senior vice president of Power Marketing at ENGIE North America, takes the board seat previously held by David Carroll, who stepped down after taking on a new professional opportunity.

Carroll, who previously served as ACP board chair, said he was confident that Young's leadership and industry experience would benefit both ACP and the wider clean power sector.

Young brings more than a decade of Apex leadership

As CEO of Apex Clean Energy, Young is responsible for the company's strategy as well as the origination, development, construction and operation of utility-scale wind, solar, storage and distributed energy projects.

During his decade in leadership at Apex, the company commercialized more than 11 GW of projects. Before becoming CEO, Young served as chief operating officer and vice president of operations, helping oversee the company's growth and the delivery of renewable energy projects across the US.

He previously held leadership positions at Vestas Wind Systems and renewable energy owner-operators. Young also began his professional career as a US Army infantry officer and graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point before earning an MBA from the University of Notre Dame.

ACP sets out priorities under new chair

In his new position, Young will focus on developing a long-range policy platform for the clean power industry and strengthening cooperation across the sector's different technologies.

ACP said the objective is to raise the standards the industry holds itself to while supporting the expansion of American clean power. The association is also focused on helping the industry respond to rising electricity demand, strengthen US energy security and support the country's economic competitiveness.

Young said the industry is prepared to deliver additional power as demand increases, arguing that clean power represents a fast and affordable source of new generation capacity.

His new responsibilities will also include continuing his support for PowerVets, an ACP initiative focused on supporting veterans working in the clean energy sector.

The leadership transition comes as ACP seeks to reinforce collaboration across the clean power industry and advance policies aimed at expanding domestic clean energy capacity while meeting the country's changing electricity needs.
