European energy hits milestone in e-methanol production at a Danish plant

European Energy has successfully produced the first e-methanol at the Power-to-X plant in Kassø, making it the world’s first and largest commercial e-methanol facility.

The fuel was produced in the plant's first methanol reactor and achieved using biogenic CO2 locally sourced from the biogas plant in Tønder.

Once operational, the plant will have the capacity to produce 42,000 tons of e-methanol, thanks to three Siemens Energy electrolyzers and a methanol circuit developed by European Energy. The electrolyzers have a combined capacity of 52.5 MW and are primarily powered by the nearby Kassø Solar Park, also developed and operated by European Energy.

This achievement comes shortly after the plant began producing green hydrogen in January 2025. By combining hydrogen with biogenic CO? in the reactor, the first e-methanol has been successfully produced, demonstrating the functionality of the plant’s methanol circuit.

The facility will be fully operational in the second quarter of 2025.

Emil Vikjær-Andresen, Executive Vice President and Head of Power-to-X at European Energy, expressed his excitement: "Producing the first e-methanol at our Kassø facility is a pivotal moment in the process we started four years ago. The lessons learned will help us refine the process, improve efficiency, and lower costs for future projects (…) This demonstrates that Power-to-X offers a practical and scalable solution for decarbonizing industries that cannot rely on direct electrification."
