Meta signs a new round of clean energy agreements totaling 2.5 GW with NextEra Energy Resources

NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, one of the largest energy infrastructure developers in the United States, and Meta Platforms Inc. (Meta), a leading global technology company, have reached approximately 2.5 gigawatts (GW) in new clean energy contracts. The milestone was achieved through 11 power purchase agreements (PPAs) and two energy storage agreements (ESAs).

Expanding clean energy across the US

NextEra Energy Resources, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, and Meta signed PPAs that enabled 2.1 GW of clean energy through nine solar projects across three major U.S. markets:

  • Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT)

  • Southwest Power Pool (SPP)

  • Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO)

In addition, NextEra Energy Resources is supporting New Mexico’s electricity system through four projects—two PPAs and two ESAs—in Valencia and De Baca counties, providing 190 megawatts (MW) of solar energy and 168 MW of battery storage. These projects utilize PNM’s Rate 36B, which allows Meta and other customers to contract clean energy more efficiently and optimize operations with 100% renewable power.

Local impact and investment

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham commented that "the collaboration between NextEra Energy Resources, Meta, and PNM in New Mexico demonstrates once again our state’s leadership in clean energy and economic development. New Mexico is driving new investments in energy and data centers that are expanding our economy, empowering our workforce, and advancing U.S. infrastructure."

The 2.5 GW across 13 projects is expected to come online between 2026 and 2028, creating up to 2,440 construction jobs, supporting local economic growth, and promoting innovation.

Statements from company leaders

Urvi Parekh, Director of Energy at Meta, said that "The integration of 2.1 GW in ERCOT, SPP, and MISO, along with over 350 MW in the tripartite collaboration with PNM in New Mexico to support our data center operations, demonstrates how industrial cooperation can drive technological progress and strengthen U.S. energy infrastructure."

Brian Bolster, President and CEO of NextEra Energy Resources, added: "As one of the largest builders of energy infrastructure in the U.S., NextEra Energy Resources drives the country’s technological growth with new energy projects. The company has actively partnered with hyperscalers to support data center operations and further U.S. leadership. We are excited to expand our collaboration with Meta, one of the most iconic US companies. These agreements demonstrate our continued commitment to providing energy solutions that support economic growth, promote innovation, and ensure the U.S. remains competitive in the AI race."

These projects add to nearly 500 MW of operational projects Meta already supports through previous agreements with NextEra Energy Resources. The new contracts reinforce both companies’ commitment to ensuring US energy leadership while supporting Meta’s goal of using 100% clean energy for its operations.
