Portugal’s renewable electricity share reaches 62% in first ten months of 2026
Renewable energy sources accounted for 62% of electricity consumption in Portugal between January and October 2026, with hydropower and wind each contributing 22% of supply, according to data published by national energy grid operator REN. Solar power accounted for a further 13%, following year-on-year growth of 10%, while biomass supplied the remaining 5%.
Over the same period, natural gas-fired generation covered 14% of electricity consumption, while net electricity imports accounted for the remaining 24%, reaching their highest-ever share of the national electricity mix for the first ten months of a year. Electricity consumption increased by 3% year-on-year, or 2.5% when adjusted for temperature and working days.
In October alone, renewable generation met 47% of Portugal’s electricity consumption, while non-renewable generation supplied 13%. Imports accounted for the remaining 40%. Hydropower and wind recorded productivity indices of 0.58 and 0.61, respectively, below their historical average of 1. By contrast, solar photovoltaic generation recorded a productivity index of 1.05.
Electricity consumption fell slightly by 0.2% in October compared with the same month in 2025, a decline that remained unchanged after adjusting for temperature and working days.
In the natural gas market, consumption decreased by 20.5% year-on-year in October, driven by reductions of 27% in the electricity generation segment and 17% in the conventional market. Across the first ten months of 2026, gas consumption fell by 1.8%, while conventional consumption declined by 2.8%.
REN also reported that Portugal’s national gas system was supplied entirely through the Sines LNG terminal in October. Gas imports originated from Nigeria (54%), the US (39%) and Russia (7%). Meanwhile, exports through the interconnector with Spain reached a volume equivalent to two-thirds of domestic consumption in October. For the period up to the end of October, net gas exports through this interconnector reached their highest level ever recorded by the national system.
