Samira Nawa named Denmark’s new Climate, Energy and Utilities minister
Denmark has formed a new government, with Prime Minister appointing Samira Nawa (Radikale Venstre) as the country’s new Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities. The ministerial handover took place on Wednesday, June 3 at Holmens Kanal 20 in Copenhagen, marking the official transition of one of Denmark’s most strategic government portfolios.
A Key Role in the Green Transition Samira Nawa succeeds Lars Aagaard (Moderaterne) and assumes office after serving as energy spokesperson for Radikale Venstre over the past four years.
She holds a Cand.polit. degree from the University of Copenhagen (2007–2014) and has undertaken additional studies at the University of Hyderabad (2012) and the London School of Economics (2009). She completed her secondary education as a mathematics student at Roskilde Katedralskole (2004–2007).
During the handover ceremony, Nawa underlined her ambition for the role, stating: “I look forward to working with everyone to bring the ambitions of Denmark’s greenest government to life.”
Focus on energy infrastructure and electrification
The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities plays a central role in Denmark’s energy strategy, with priorities including accelerating electricity grid expansion, increasing renewable energy deployment, and advancing the electrification of society. These objectives are considered essential to meeting Denmark’s long-term climate targets and ensuring system stability during the energy transition.
Industry reaction and grid concerns
Industry organisation Green Power Denmark welcomed the appointment and emphasized the urgency of addressing capacity constraints in the transmission grid.
Kristian Jensen, CEO of Green Power Denmark, highlighted the importance of rapid action, noting that the organisation looks forward to close cooperation with the new minister on grid expansion, renewable energy growth, and electrification.
He also pointed to what he described as a critical bottleneck in transmission capacity, calling for immediate measures to strengthen the national grid.
“We are convinced that Samira Nawa will deliver. Denmark must in the future be green, electric, and independent of imported oil and gas. The green transition is no longer just about ambition, but about execution. We look forward to close cooperation with Samira Nawa on the concrete decisions that will ensure more renewable energy, a faster expansion of the electricity grid, and increased electrification of society,” said Jensen.
