Ireland sets new record for wind power generation
Ireland has set a new record peak for wind-powered electricity generation, with output reaching 3,898 MW on Saturday, 14 February at 5:50 pm, according to data from EirGrid.
The new figure surpasses the previous records of 3,884 MW registered in February 2025 and 3,866 MW in December 2023, confirming the continued expansion of wind energy capacity across the country.
Wind power remains the leading source of renewable energy in Ireland. EirGrid’s data shows that in 2025 wind accounted for 33% of the overall electricity fuel mix. During the last month, almost 40% of the country’s electricity generation came from renewable sources, including 33% from wind, alongside contributions from solar and hydropower.
Diarmaid Gillespie, Director of System Operations at EirGrid, described the new milestone as a significant achievement for the sector. “This peak of 3,898 MW for wind power recorded on 14 February is another important milestone for wind generation and for renewable energy in Ireland,” he said.
Gillespie added that Ireland’s electricity system can currently accommodate up to 75% of generation from renewable sources. “In line with Government targets, EirGrid is working to upgrade the electricity grid to make it more sustainable for the future and help ensure that more sources of renewable energy can be connected,” he stated.
The new record highlights Ireland’s progress in expanding its renewable energy capacity and strengthening its power system to support the transition towards a low-carbon electricity mix.
