Germany moves forward with plans for one of Europe's largest battery storage projects
ADS-TEC Energy is advancing the development of a battery energy storage system (BESS) with 1 GW of power and 4 GWh of storage capacity, planned near the Pulverdingen substation in the German state of Baden-Württemberg.
According to the company's announcement on October 28, 2026, the competent authority has confirmed that the documentation submitted for the building permit application is complete. However, the permit has not yet been granted, and construction has not started.
Located near Markgröningen, the facility would be capable of delivering its rated power for approximately four hours. If completed as planned, it could become one of Europe's largest battery energy storage installations.
ADS-TEC Energy is targeting grid connection in 2029.
A 1 GW battery system to manage renewable electricity generation
The project is designed to provide approximately 1,000 MW of power and 4,000 MWh of energy storage capacity, allowing electricity to be stored and discharged at full rated power for around four hours.
According to the company, the batteries will be able to absorb electricity when generation exceeds demand, particularly during periods of high solar and wind output, and release it back into the grid when electricity demand increases.
Beyond shifting electricity between different periods of the day, the system is designed to support frequency regulation, peak load management and grid restoration following power outages.
Under normal operating conditions, the installation would operate at different power levels depending on grid requirements, rather than continuously discharging at its maximum capacity.
ADS-TEC Energy plans to integrate its proprietary battery management technology, including electronic systems and software developed by the company over more than 15 years.
The project will also involve European suppliers providing electrical equipment, transformers, switchgear and high-voltage components.
Investment requirements could approach €1 billion
ADS-TEC Energy notes that battery storage facilities of this scale typically require investments ranging from several hundred million euros to approximately €1 billion.
However, the company has not disclosed a definitive investment budget for the Pulverdingen project.
Alongside the permitting process, ADS-TEC Energy is holding discussions with potential investors and strategic partners to establish the project's financing and ownership structure.
The company intends to sell a majority stake in the project company, while retaining a minority interest and remaining involved in its long-term operations.
ADS-TEC Energy expects to generate revenue through three channels: supplying its battery management technology, providing technical services throughout the facility's operating life, and maintaining an equity interest in the project company.
The company considers obtaining the building permit an important prerequisite for finalizing the financing and partnership agreements.
Battery storage revenues will depend on electricity market conditions
In addition to its technical functions, the facility could generate revenue through wholesale electricity trading and participation in Germany's balancing markets.
In its announcement, ADS-TEC Energy refers to market data indicating that large-scale battery systems have generated benchmark revenues of approximately €150,000 to €250,000 per MW per year through wholesale trading and balancing services.
These figures are market benchmarks, not revenue forecasts for the Pulverdingen facility.
Actual financial performance will depend on electricity prices, market conditions, operational strategies and the project's final ownership structure.
Furthermore, the cited benchmarks relate to battery systems used for market comparisons and do not necessarily reflect the economic performance of a four-hour storage facility.
ADS-TEC Energy targets grid connection in 2029
Thomas Speidel, founder and CEO of ADS-TEC Energy, highlighted the work undertaken over recent years to prepare the project, as well as cooperation with authorities, landowners and the electricity grid operator.
The company expects the installation to help manage fluctuations in renewable electricity generation in Baden-Württemberg while providing additional flexibility to respond to changes in demand.
Although the permitting documentation has been confirmed as complete, the project still requires a building permit and finalized financing agreements.
ADS-TEC Energy continues to target 2029 for grid connection, meaning the planned addition of 1 GW of power and 4 GWh of storage capacity remains subject to the successful completion of the project's next development stages.
